The Palestine Legal Aid Fund is an unprecedented legal aid fund to give Palestinian victims of human rights violations access to justice in international courts. An intricate web of governmental, intergovernmental, corporate and military interests support Israel’s actions against Palestinians, and have been held in clear breach of international law. Yet, in spite of the clarity of international law, there has never been a coordinated, strategic and sustainable effort to bring the Palestinian cause before international courts before. The history of the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa – in particular the International Defence and Aid Fund – shows that such a legal aid fund can have a dramatic impact. Over 20 years, that fund engaged lawyers to defend the rights of 28,000 people, including Nelson Mandela himself. It is precisely the purpose of this work to allow Palestinian claims to be heard in an independent, non-violent and non-political forum, detached from the politics of the conflict.
